Condemnation of Anti-Asian Violence

The Global Arts + Humanities Discovery Theme condemns anti-Asian racism and violence in all its forms. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Anti-Asian hate crimes have surged in the United States. Anti-Asian racism and violence, however, are not anomalous or singular to the global pandemic. These acts are deeply rooted in the violence of American imperialism, white nationalism, xenophobia and racialized misogyny. Therefore, this moment demands more than naming the crisis or identifying motives: it requires historical contextualization and recognition of these intersections.

As Associate Professor and Program Director of Ohio State’s Asian American Studies Program, Pranav Jani notes, “This history has always been about gender, sexuality, and class as well as race – and violence against Asian/Asian American women has to be understood as occurring at these intersections.” Read full statement

Global Arts + Humanities remains deeply committed to global diversity, inclusion and equity and to community-engaged partnerships that address historical struggles for social justice. We stand in solidarity with our Asian, Asian American, Pacific Islander and Desi American communities at The Ohio State University and beyond.
