Dancing with Devils | Latin American Masks Traditions
This exhibition features Latin American festival masks from the Kawsay Ukhunchay Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Arts and Cultural Artifacts Research Collection at The Ohio State University, along with documentary photographs of the Diablada de Píllaro (Devils Dance of Píllaro, Ecuador) taken by Ohio State photojournalist, Leonardo Carrizo. Masks on display were donated by Ohio State alumnus Mark Gordon and crafted by ltalo Espín. The exhibition will be on display from September 9 through December 19 in the Barnett Center Collaboratory. Reservations can be made through the Barnett Center website.
Maskmaker ltalo Espín, dancer/ethnographer Fernando Endara, and photojournalist Leonardo Carrizo are K'acha Willaykuna residency artists for autumn 2022 and will present talks, workshops and performances.

Fernando Endara I. Diablo de Píllaro, músico, docente, crítico literario y gestor cultural. Licenciado en Comunicación Social. Maestro en Antropología. Profesor Titular de la Universidad Tecnológica Indoamérica en la ciudad de Ambato (Ecuador).
Soy bailador de la fiesta andina: "Diablada Pillareña", desde los 13 años. Durante los últimos 8 años me involucré en proyectos de gestión cultural comunitaria, para la visibilización y el análisis de la cultura viva comunitaria en las zonas organizativas de la diablada. En años recientes, realicé investigaciones en torno a los cambios en la Diablada Pillareña, durante los últimos 30 años (1990-2020), en el contexto de los debates sobre patrimonialización de las fiestas. Mis intereses abarcan el área de las humanidades, teniendo una fuerte inclinación por la literatura y la historia. En ese marco, administro el blog literario @fer_libros en Instagram, en donde he reseñado más de 250 libros de literatura hispanoamericana, ecuatoriana y universal. Además, por varios años he mantenido espacios de entrevista en radios universitarias y culturales de Ecuador, en programas enfocados en la literatura como "Contrapunto" o "Vida del ahorcado", y en la antropología, como "Antropología en 35mm". En la actualidad, además de la labor docente, realizo proyectos, charlas y talleres enfocados en el análisis y la interpretación de las fiestas andinas pillareñas, con perspectiva autoetnográfica.

Fernando Endara I. Diablo de Píllaro, musician, educator, literary critic and cultural manager. Degree in SocialCommunication. Master in Anthropology. Professor at the Universidad Tecnológica Indoamérica in the city of Ambato (Ecuador).
I have been a dancer in the Andean festival tradition of the "Diablada Pillareña" since I was 13 years old. During the last eight years I have been involved in community cultural management projects and focusing on giving visibility to and providing analysis of the living culture of communities invested in the organizing the annual diablada festival. Recently, I have carried out research on the changes in the Diablada Pillareña over the last 30 years (1990-2020), in the context of the debates over festival patrimony. My interests span areas of the humanities, with a strong inclination for literature andhistory. In this context, I manage the literary blog @fer_libros on Instagram, where I have reviewed more than 250 booksof Latin American, Ecuadorian, and global literature. In addition, I maintain interview forums for university and cultural radio programs in Ecuador, as well as programs focused on literature such as "Contrapunto" or "Vida del ahorcado", andin anthropology, such as "Antropología en 35mm". Aside from teaching at the University, I carry out projects, talks and workshops focused on the analysis and interpretation of the Andean Pillareña festivals from an autoethnographicp erspective.

Desde niño sentía gusto al dibujar en cada cuaderno pizarrón o pupitre que se cruzaba en mi camino. En laadolescencia inicio mi formación académica en arte, en el Colegio Universitario de Artes Plásticas - Adscrito a laFacultad de Artes de la Universidad Central del Ecuador, en donde obtuve mi Bachillerato en Artes Plásticas -Mención Pintura y Cerámica”. Luego continúo mi formación en la Facultad de Artes de la Universidad Central delEcuador y en la escuela de diseño de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador Sede Ambato.
En mi vida laboral llego a ser Director de Cultura del Municipio de Píllaro, en donde acumulo una ampliatrayectoria en la gestión cultural para el beneficio de la comunidad.
Luego del paso por algunos temas expresivos a lo largo de mi trayectoria académica y profesional, mi obra se sitúa en la reivindicación de la identidad, basado en mi profundo apego al espacio geográfico natal. Es así como mevuelvo un estudioso de una de las manifestaciones culturales más importantes del país, como es la Diablada Pillareña (PATRIMONIO CULTURAL DEL ECUADOR), Justamente la obra que ejecuto descontextualiza elproceso constructivo y funcional de la careta de diablo Píllaro proyectándola en una propia visión artística, dejando de lado el proceso artesanal para dar paso a lo plástico, simbólico y conceptual de estos tiempos, afirmando uncarácter identitario a la obra, a través de los rasgos, formas y colores, conjugados en la ejecución de distintas técnicas artísticas.

Ítalo Espín Haro
Plastic Artist and Cultural Manager from Píllaro, Ecuador
Since I was a child I have delighted in drawing on every blackboard, notebook, or desk that crossed my path. In my teenage years I embarked on my academic training in art at the University School of Plastic Arts – connected to the ArtsCollege of the Central University of Ecuador, where I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Plastic Arts with a specialization in Painting and Ceramics. I continued my training in the College of Arts of the Central University of Ecuador and at theSchool of Design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica of Ecuador in Ambato. In my professional life, I becameDirector of Culture of the Municipality of Píllaro, where I developed an extensive career in cultural management for thebenefit of the community.
After experimenting with different expressive forms and themes throughout my academic and professional career, my worksettled on the affirmation of identity, based on my deep attachment to my native land. This is how I became a scholar ofone of the most important cultural manifestations of the country, which is the Diablada Pillareña (CULTURALHERITAGE OF ECUADOR). My work uncouples the constructive and functional processes of the devil’s mask of Píllaro,projecting it in its own artistic vision, setting aside the artisanal process in order focus on plastic, symbolic andconceptual dimensions that affirm elements of identity in the character to the work through the combination of features,shapes and colors, and the execution of different artistic techniques.
